AC Dynamometers

Features

  • Performance testing
  • Range from 60kW - 865kW
  • Small footprint drive
  • Fast delivery

The system offered by A&D includes all the components required to complete a dynamometer installation:

  • AC dynamometer with in-line torque flange, shaft encoder, mounting base, shaft guards and calibration equipment
  • Four quadrants variable frequency (vector control) IGBT drive, available in regenerative and non-regenerative configuration
  • Shielded and grounded isolation transformer
  • High-speed serial communication interface to A&D control systems enabling various control modes such as speed, current, torque and road load

The dynamometer is built in a foot-mounted cast iron frame, providing both stiffness and efficient heat transfer. The stator is made of high-quality lamination and isolation class H material. The pressure cast aluminum rotor is guided with high-precision pre-loaded grease lubricated bearings. A forced air system ensures cooling of both the stator and the rotor. The dynamometer is fitted with an in-line torque flange and an optical shaft encoder. The system is delivered with a custom height mounting base and a torque calibration arm. Calibration weights are optional.

The Drive

The drive is a four-quadrant variable frequency water-cooled unit. Its compact, space-saving design typically takes less than half the room of competing systems. It is available in both regenerative and non-regenerative constructions. In both cases, the inverter is built with IGBT operating at 5 kHz. A DSP control board performs real time control of the inverter output in speed, current or torque modes. This board connects directly to the A&D control systems via a high-speed RS485 to enable advanced control modes such as road load, inertia simulation and bumpless switch on the fly. A PLC manages the alarms and status information. Its front door display offers a convenient diagnostic tool. The drive includes controlled power supply for the dynamometer fans, as well as automatic alarm and shutdown triggered by the dynamometer winding temperature switches. It also includes a front door interlocked main power disconnect. An optional pendant allows manual operation of the drive and dynamometer as a stand-alone system.
